Natural Flavors
flavorant
Found in all your favorite flavored products.
This is the most common type of flavorant, even in teas, ketchup, juices, ANYTHING!
How “Natural” are we talking? Turns out not very natural at all.
FDA Definition: ““...the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional. ”
So... essential oil if we’re lucky,
beaver gland secretion if we’re unlucky? (That’s a real example FYI – Google “Castoreum”)
Worse, there can be up to 50 – 100 ingredients in “Natural Flavors.” Solvents, preservatives, and weird chemicals you didn’t realize.
On top of that, they don’t have to tell you what’s in it! Shady.
In most cases, labs start with one part of a fruit or source, then modify it heavily.
If it was a good ingredient, they would list it by name! (i.e. – vanilla bean powder)
